Root Canal Therapy
Best dentist in Miami

Our experienced team here at Azar Dentistry is here to help. Root canal therapy is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that has been infected due to a deep cavity or decay. The treatment involves removing the pulp and the nerves of the tooth and cleaning the infected area.

A tooth's pulp and nerve tissue are not vital to a tooth's health and function after it has fully emerged from the gums. If the treatment is not performed, bacteria builds up at the root tip and the infection of the pulp can spread to the surrounding bone.

This results in pain and swelling, which may mean your tooth will likely need to be removed. If not removed, a patient could develop a tooth abscess, which could be potentially life-threatening. The best option is to avoid infection and get a root canal treatment early on, while it is still just a simple procedure.

What are the signs that a root canal is needed?

• Severe tooth pain while chewing

• Your tooth pain wakes you up at night

• Teeth that are highly sensitive to hot or cold, with the sensitivity lingering for some time.

• Discoloration or darkening of the tooth

• Swollen gums in the area of the infected tooth

What does the treatment involve?

First, an opening is made into the pulp chamber through the crown of the tooth. Once the pulp is removed, the root canal is thoroughly cleaned. If the dentist decides to complete the root canal therapy in multiple visits, a temporary filling will be placed to protect the tooth. When you return, the dentist will remove the temporary filling, re-clean the root canal and pulp chamber, and place a permanent filling and/or crown over the tooth.

Root canal therapy has a high rate of success any many teeth undergoing the procedure can be saved to last a lifetime. Additionally, the crown or filling placed the completion of the procedure makes it hard to notice by others that you had the treatment.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are becoming an increasingly popular method for replacing missing teeth. In this procedure, titanium supports are surgically fused with your jawbone, and act as an anchor for naturally looking false teeth. Dental implants are not only used for individual tooth replacement but can also be used when replacing multiple teeth as an alternative to dentures.

Advantages of dental implants

  • Implants are very natural looking, and they blend seamlessly with your smile
  • The biocompatibility of titanium allows the implant to be thoroughly secured to your jaw
  • Dental implants can last a lifetime if properly taken care of
  • Improved chewing and speech due to the strength of the implant
  • Implants are resilient, and they will not show signs of wear overtime

Types of implants

There are a few different types of dental implants. Dr. Azar will consult with you to determine which type of implant would best suit your needs. The most common types of dental implants are endosteal and subperiosteal.

  • Endosteal - inserted directly into the jawbone, these are the most common type of dental implants. These are made with titanium screws that fuse to the jawbone overtime. A custom crown is attached to the titanium screw to give you the appearance of a brand new smile.
  • Subperiosteal - this type of implant is inserted under the gumline but above the jawbone. This is a preferable choice for patients who may not have enough jawbone to support an endosteal implant.

If a patient does not have enough jawbone to support an implant, they could also get a jaw augmentation surgery to encourage bone growth. This would be a simple procedure of bone grafting to cause the rejuvenation of jawbone overtime. If there is nothing to support, like if you lost a tooth, then bone will recede. Jaw augmentation gives patients to restore their facial structure back to a healthy state.

Dental implants will require several trips to your North Miami Beach dentist. First, you will come in for a consultation to determine if dental implants are right for you. The procedure will consist of your dentist will create a space in your gum line to insert the titanium screw. Sedation may be used if your dentist deems necessary. This will need time to heal, so a temporary crown may be provided. You will come back in a few weeks later after the screw has fully fused to the jaw. That is when the custom crown will be attached and the implant will be completed. If you would like to learn more about getting dental implants, feel free to come in for a consultation with Dr. Azar.

TMJ Treatment

The temporomandibular joint is the hinge that allows you to open and close your jaw. It connects your jaw to your skull on both sides. Speaking, chewing, and swallowing would not be possible without your temporomandibular joints.

Some patients may experience pain in either their temporomandibular joint or the surrounding muscles, which could be a sign of a TMJ disorder. TMJ disorders can make simple daily tasks painful and difficult.

TMJ disorders are more common than you might think, affecting about 15% of the population, according to the American Dental Association.

The following are common causes of TMJ disorders

  • Grinding of teeth
  • The alignment of your teeth and jaw
  • Arthritis
  • Dislocation
  • Oral Injury

Diagnosing the cause

There are a few different ways your North Miami Beach dentist can diagnose the source of your TMJ disorder.

  • X-rays to analyze your teeth and jaw
  • CT scan to provide detailed images of the bones involved
  • MRI to reveal problems with the joint's disk or surrounding tissue

There are several therapy options to help cope with the pain and decrease the discomfort of TMJ disorders. Diagnosis is important for patients who may experience extreme tenderness in the jaw area. If left untreated, TMJ could potentially cause long-lasting damage to your teeth. Dr. Azar can properly diagnose your condition and the cause, and discuss the following treatment options:

  • Facial exercises to help gain strength within the jaw
  • Medications including muscle relaxers, anti-anxiety, and anti-inflammatory
  • Night guards to protect teeth from stress clenching or grinding of teeth
  • Surgery

In some cases, procedures may be recommended to correct a possibly irregular bite. A simple reshaping of your teeth could help reduce the discomfort of a TMJ disorder and restore the balance of pressure distributed throughout your bite, though the need for this procedure is rare. Consult with your North Miami Beach dentist to determine if this procedure would be right for you.

Ongoing treatment for TMJ

Your dentist will have to monitor your TMJ after a diagnosis just to make sure that the condition is not progressing. Using fluoride will also help protect any remaining enamel that may have been damaged by TMJ disorder. Avoid grinding teeth and consistently wear night guards if prescribed.
